Updating Goals/ OKRs

Once you’re done with the Goal creation process, the next step is to manage your Goals. This largely involves updating the progress of the Goals and the Goal owners, managers and collaborators can also modify the Goals, divide Goals into sub-parts and give appreciation or share feedback for the progress.

There are 4 parts to “Updating Goals” in Mesh.

1. Goal Progress

The Progress section in the Goals menu is for any Goal owner to update the progress of their Goals. This helps managers keep an eye on the productivity of every team member and align responsibilities. To update the Goal progress, write down the corresponding value of the part of the Goal that has been accomplished, in numerical terms, in the “Achieved” box.

Let’s say the Goal is to write 3 blogs in a month, and the Goal owner has already written 2 blogs. The Goal owner can put “2” in the box, which will create a Goal check-in, and a graphical timestamp below, indicating the progress and the date of the progress.

Goal Status Updates

In Progress:

Any new Goal will always have a start date and a due date. And whatever the Goal is, it needs to be timely checked-in so as to be on-track for its completion. This would also help your manager be in the know of the Goal’s progress.

On the Mesh dashboard, there are 3 types of status updates available that indicate the progress of your Goals.

  • On-Track - Indicates that a Goal is progressing aptly and is likely to be completed by its given due date
  • Off-Track - Indicates that a Goal is not progressing as expected and might not be completed by its due date
  • At-Risk - Indicates that a Goal is severely lagging behind and is unlikely to be completed by its due date


There might be situations where irrespective of the progress (or no progress) on a Goal, it’s still achieved due to some third-party help. Or, the Goal has ceased to be a priority now. In such cases, this is the section where you mark the final status or closures on your individual Goals.

These are again of 3 types,

  • Closed - Achieved - Mark this when the Goal has been accomplished.
  • Closed - Not Achieved - Mark this when the Goal has not yet been accomplished but it’s still in progress.
  • Closed - Dropped - Mark this when the Goal is no more a priority and has been abandoned.

2. Goal Details

The Goal details section houses the same fields that are required to be filled in during the “Goal creation” process, except two new additions - “Tracking” & “My Weightage”. Every single detail that you filled in during the Goal creation process can be modified again, at any point of time, through this window.

For teams that predominantly work with external platforms for managing their tasks, such as Jira for developers and product managers or Salesforce for sales folks, Mesh provides you with tracking options to automatically sync your updates on Jira/ Salesforce with your Mesh account.

My Weightage: 

The weightage part is where, as a Goal owner for multiple Goals, you can assign different weightages to your Goals, as per their individual importance. To know more about Goal Weightage, checkout Understanding Privacy Settings & Weightage of Goals.

3. Tasks

Tasks is where you can divide a Goal into its sub-parts and can add title, collaborators and due dates for each individual task. There could be multiple ways of using this section such as for initiatives or even project management. It predominantly helps in keeping track of each micro deliverable under the larger Goals.

You can further go inside every task and do a whole bunch of things, such as, 

  • Add a status update - To be done or Completed
  • Change the due date
  • Add description
  • Add repeating frequency (inside the “show more details”)
  • Add sub-tasks (smaller milestones)
  • Share suggestions/ feedback in its dedicated comments section


The comments section is something anyone can use, from your team members to your manager to collaborators, for a whole bunch of things. 

A few major use cases could include,

  • Status updates on Goals
  • Suggestions and feedback 
  • Applauses and recognition

Apart from text, one can also add images, GIFs and emojis to the comments, and can also edit the comment after it has been given. The best part, however, is that with a simple click of a button, you can change the visibility of comment from public to private. While checking Goals and OKRs are a great way to stay on top of all your responsibilities, another equally important concept postulated by John Doerr is CFR, which stands for Conversations, Feedback & Recognition. And this is where the Comments box comes into play. 

Through the Comments box, managers are expected to, 

  • Exchange bidirectional dialogues between the contributors and themselves, aimed at driving performance and improvement 
  • Foster an environment of appreciation and recognition towards deserving contributions
